Lakeside Cabins
The Lakeside program offers an opportunity to learn from the wilderness
without being completely immersed in it. While staying in the cabins,
you can rest in quiet reflection, watch the rhythms of an osprey, run
along the gentle sloping beach or marvel at the mystery of the Northern
Lights. The cabins have been used for personal retreats, family
vacations, groups with disabilities, and other group gatherings. We
invite you to immerse yourself in the beauty, mystery and wholeness of
the Northwoods wilderness.
The four cabins offer a westward view, a 500-foot sand beach and plenty
of opportunity to relax, reflect and play. They are located on
Armstrong Lake, a 382-acre lake located 10 miles west of Ely,
Minnesota. Though Armstrong is a motor boat lake and there are other
residents on the lake, most of the shoreline is wooded, with birch,
aspen and pine. In addition to the recreational and educational
opportunities available in Ely, Wilderness Wind offers day trips into the Boundary Waters.
Each cabin has a combined kitchen/dining area with a stove,
refrigerator/freezer and cooking and eating utensils. Though the cabins
do not have running water, there are sinks for doing dishes. Hot water
and showers are within walking distance at the wheelchair-accessible
bath house.
The Gathering Place (pictured above center) offers an indoor space for
families and larger groups to gather for meetings, games or to share a
meal. We are grateful for all the volunteers and donors who contributed
toward this memorial to Mike Hofkamp. We worked to incorporate Mike's
appreciation for third world cultures, simplicity and the importance of
relationships into the building.
